BGS Grading: Should You Submit a Card or Buy an Already Graded Copy?

The best-looking raw card does not automatically become a profitable grading submission. Compare what you have with the cost and realistic uncertainty of professional grading.

Identify the exact card

Confirm year, set, parallel, serial number, player and any variant. Use completed sales for the correct printing. Misidentifying a parallel can distort the entire calculation.

Study condition conservatively

Examine corners, edges, surface and centering in strong, neutral light. Photos hide flaws and people routinely overestimate grades. Consider that a card may receive a lower grade than you hope or be declined for authentication reasons.

Count all submission expenses

Include grading tier, declared-value terms, shipping both ways, insurance and any potential upcharges. Check current company terms before mailing anything; fees and processing times can change.

Compare alternate paths

Look up recently completed sales for the same card and certification level, minus selling fees and shipping. Sometimes buying an already graded card is cheaper and less uncertain than paying for a new submission.
